How do you eat an elephant?

Answer: Little by little, bit by bit.

It's final. I will be running my first (maybe only) ultra marathon in this year's Bataan Death March 102.

People ask me why and I wish I had a deeper reason for wanting to run an ultra. I want to do it because it's there -- a new running challenge waiting to be conquered.

102 kilometers from Mariveles, Bataan to the old train station in San Fernando, Pampanga in 18 hours or less.

An ultra is unknown territory for the marathon foodie.
42K is already long. The BDM is twice that distance and then some 18K more. So how am I preparing for this race?

Mileage is a given, but one needs a race plan you can commit to on race day. Pretty much like preparing a trial brief at the beginning of the litigation process.

I made a guide and it looks good on paper. Eugene will be my one-man support crew. I hope it all comes together on race day. Wish me luck?

Hi, good luck on your upcoming ultra marathon. To someone who's into 5K's only, like me, that is overwhelming. But then I know you can do it and you will finish it. :-)

Nice ng Four Seasons ni Vivaldi and Bach's Pachelbel's Canon in D major.

Anyway, good luck again.

that's a very challenging run. good luck! are you joining the TNF Trail Run at Nuvali too?

Thanks Crestina!

I like Spring and Autumn in Four Seasons, also the Brandenburg Concerto is great for running. Pachelbel's Canon in D minor is not just great for wedding marches but for running as well.

Hi Haids. I don't want to dampen your spirit but isn't this too much too soon? God bless on the training though.

Hello Anon!

The Great LL Run will push through. Raffy Uytiepo will be the race director this year. I hope they come up with a new and better route. Not sure yet about the distance.

Hello VTA,

I really don't know if it's too soon. It probably is. But you'll never know unless you try. Last year only two women finished. There were some very experienced runners last year who DNF'ed.

I'm really just hoping for the best and plan to stick to the plan.

After scouring through all the BDM tales from last year -- there were two common mistakes -- they were not prepared for the heat and they did not stick to their race pace plan. I will hopefully try to learn from their collective experiences.

=)

good luck, Atty!

Ummm...include Dolo-Neurobion into your post-ultramarathon medications. It's actually Paracetamol with Vitamin B1, B6 and B12. Take 1 tablet in the morning and evening. It really worked for me after my half mary!

I just recently told by my Lola that one of her cousins died defending Corregidor before it fell to the hand of the Japs. So you have another reason to run! We will be praying for you and your success to this next adventure you will have!

Again, good luck and God bless!

Cheers,
Ling

the key is to move forward EVEN when resting and eating! remember that for every minute you stop, you will have to double that up to make for lost time.

i will see you on the road.

walk!

and while we are at it, why will you run this ultra you've been asked? read up on my latest post.

"...I will be running my first (maybe only) ultra marathon in this year's Bataan Death March 102."-you are going to eat your words when sanity creeps back your head my dear, believe me.doing an ultra just gets way better as you do it more often. ; )

OMG! OMG! 102 Km? Wow! That's super! I wish you lots of luck this March Ms Häyds. I know you can get to the finish line in no time (i say this because i know you are well-prepared for this one) and i can see that it's going to be one of your biggest race achievement ever! Or maybe it should be at least one of the top 5 eeheheheh. No pressure intended, just saying congratulations in advance =)

I know this is a bit cheesy but this blog also inspired me to join my first marathon hopefully this coming April. I will soon be a part of Aegis Black Panthers and i can't wait. I'm really excited. I'm such a big fan of your blog and to be honest, i'm not much of a reader type but i frequently visit you blog to read your full entries. Like running, it's addicting - simple yet very well-written and informative. Very cool.

Oh by the way, you and vilma Andales are my most fave local news anchors that i really enjoy watching. Keep it up and thank you for the inspiration.

PS: You know, you just make me want to get out there more often and just GO for it. - markin gomez

wow. i've tried a 50k ultra last year, and that was pretty difficult... i could imagine that this would be twice as hard. may i suggest the ff...

1. bring more hydration 'coz you'll probably be needing more. (easy lang ito 'coz your support vehicle can buy stuff along the way naman)
2. salt caps/stick every 1-2 hours
3. compression tights or muscle tape for post recovery
4. try a faster pace (maybe 7-8kph?) during the first few hours while it's still cold. it wont be very taxing and at the same time it'll give you ample time for stops, breaks, and snacks/lunch during the later part of the day.

well yung lang naman... stay hydrated, and you'll be ok. good luck on your run haide. :)
